The Spiritual Checklist

Picture from torontohydro.com
Do you ever find yourself caught up in completing a "spiritual checklist?"

Read Bible. Check.

Pray. Check.

Go to church. Check.

Attend Bible study. Check.

Be good. Check.

If you answered "yes" to that question, here's another...

Do you find that going through the checklist helps you build a closer relationship to God? Or do you tend to feel further away from Him?

  1. Yes, i'm a list maker so that comes naturally for me and it makes me feel further from God. I actually took a break from Bible studies a couple of years ago because I felt like reading God's word was starting to be another thing on my things to do. Since then, I have found so much more joy in spending time with God and spending time in his word-no pressure or expectations. Just a time to "be still" and know!

  3. It's so hard not to fall into that checklist mentality. But it really is all about a relationship with a living God. Thanks for that great reminder today!

  4. my focus is usually on prayer. If I am talking to God all day, on and off, it's been a successful day. Where I haven't been so good is at the listening part, which is where the Bible comes in. I am making an effort to find answers in His Word. I don't use a checklist for this, cuz when I have done that, I've usually failed miserably. It really is about the relationship. He's my Daddy :)

  5. Hey Tyler- Good post:)

One song that truly speaks to me is "A Little Longer"- there was a dance at the WJOF conference last fall that reiterated our call to be still and just "Be" with the Father... we don't have to "DO" anything, but it's in His presence, we receive guidance for that minute, day, week for what He is asking us to do, pray, think or serve others. It's a healing reality to know the finished work of Jesus on the cross really meant "It is finished!". Done are the spiritual checklists- but wide open are the doors of the Holy Spirit to give counsel and direction to use in unique ways. No cookie cutter journey of faith! Have a super day sister!
